Visual - Spatial Orienting in Autism 1

چکیده

Visual-spatial orienting in high-functioning adults with autism and both chronologicaland mental-age normal controls was examined. Three experiments were conducted in which stimuli were presented centrally and~or laterally (left or right of central fixation), and either detection or identification was required. The group with autism differed from normal controls by responding faster to central than to lateral stimuli, and by showing a left visual field advantage for stimulus detection only in the simplest condition (lateral presentations alone). Discussion focuses on the apparent abnormalities in disengaging~shifting attention, and on the coordination of attentional and motor systems in autism.

Paternal autistic traits are predictive of infants visual attention.

Since subthreshold autistic social impairments aggregate in family members, and since attentional dysfunctions appear to be one of the earliest cognitive markers of children with autism, we investigated in the general population the relationship between infants' attentional functioning and the autistic traits measured in their parents. Orienting and alerting attention systems were measured in 8...

Event-related brain response abnormalities in autism: evidence for impaired cerebello-frontal spatial attention networks.

Although under some conditions the attention-related late positive event-related potential (ERP) response (LPC) is apparently normal in autism during visual processing, the LPC elicited by visuospatial processing may be compromised. Results from this study provide evidence for abnormalities in autism in two components of the LPC generated during spatial processing. The early frontal distributio...

A meta-analysis of visual orienting in autism

BACKGROUND Visual orienting is inconsistently reported to be impaired in autism. METHODS We conducted a meta-analysis on visual orienting in autism. We focused on studies that used a Posner-type task. A total of 18 research papers published between 1993 and 2011 were included in our meta-analysis. We examined the effects of differences in experimental design as well as differences in particip...

Visual orienting in children with autism: Hyper‐responsiveness to human eyes presented after a brief alerting audio‐signal, but hyporesponsiveness to eyes presented without sound

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been associated with reduced orienting to social stimuli such as eyes, but the results are inconsistent. It is not known whether atypicalities in phasic alerting could play a role in putative altered social orienting in ASD. Here, we show that in unisensory (visual) trials, children with ASD are slower to orient to eyes (among distractors) than controls matche...

Disengagement of Visual Attention in Infancy is Associated with Emerging Autism in Toddlerhood

BACKGROUND Early emerging characteristics of visual orienting have been associated with a wide range of typical and atypical developmental outcomes. In the current study, we examined the development of visual disengagement in infants at risk for autism. METHODS We measured the efficiency of disengaging from a central visual stimulus to orient to a peripheral one in a cohort of 104 infants wit...
